Twenty Scottish Cup ties in a row undefeated for Brendan Rodgers, that’s some record, and with a fair throw of the dice it should extend to twenty-two in a row, and another World Record Ninth Treble for “The Famous Glasgow Celtic”. It should have been a much more emphatic victory against Hibernian yesterday, I think 2-0 flattered them, especially in a one-sided first half, which Celtic dominated with over eighty percent possession, but once again Nick Walsh did his best to spoil the game with his officiating, he was once the up and coming star of Scottish Refereeing, now he’s just as useless as the rest of them, in the second half he managed to block Celtic attacks three times in quick succession.
Fair play to Hibs for bringing 7,000 supporters to the home of the Champions, they made themselves be heard early on, but the more Celtic continued to dominate, the quieter they became. Celtic Park in recent years has been a ground for home supporters only in reality, the exception this year has been most of the Champions League matches, and two cup ties against Raith Rovers and Falkirk. Since the Celtic Supporters travel in huge numbers to away grounds, and always sell-out our allocation, maybe it’s time some more of the other team’s supporters started travelling to the East End of Glasgow to support their team.
We are now at the business end of the season, and everything seems to be going to plan, we have all but won the double, and will soon surely complete the historic ninth treble, but at all times we need to keep our eyes on the prize. We have a fantastic playing squad at the moment, with a very quick and strong starting eleven, and the big bonus is, that when Brendan makes substitutes, they do exactly what they are supposed to do, have a positive effect on the team, and the result of the game. Once again Luke Mc Cowan has come on and contributed with a brilliant assist for fellow sub Adam Idah, I’m pretty sure both players will be even better next season with a full pre-season under their belts.
Arne Engels is now showing why Celtic paid big money for his transfer, the Bhoy is showing his class now in every game, and he will only get better, winning a treble in his first season will have a major effect on him, our problem is going to be, how long can we keep him at Celtic? It also looks like Celtic have identified his successor, or hopefully his midfield playing partner in Lennon Miller of Motherwell, the boy looks like a great prospect, so hopefully a deal can be done in the summer. One Bhoy we definitely must try to keep is Daizen Maeda, what a season the flying machine has had so far, 27 goals is an amazing contribution, and with lots of assists as well, with possibly eleven more games to play, it will be interesting to see how many Daizen ends up with.
Big congratulations to a very good friend of mine from Port Glasgow Jackie Dow, who reached the milestone of 100 years old on Wednesday March 5th, Jackie still has his season ticket, and goes to every home game, and to Hampden, which is remarkable given his age, Jackie has slowed down a bit, but he’s still as sharp as a tack, he attends mass every morning in St Francis Church. Thanks to Michael Nicholson for inviting Jackie and some of his Family to the game yesterday, the wee man loved if, especially the reception he got, and having a couple of haufs.
With every great story there always seems to be a sad one, I had the honour of attending the Requiem Mass for Evan Williams at St Michael’s in Dumbarton on Thursday morning. I got to know Evan very well over the last decade or so, he was a smashing guy, very friendly and approachable, he and Bertie Auld used to visit Dubai every year, there was never a dull moment when those two were around. Sadly, we are losing too many of our hero’s now, so we need to cherish them while we can, and honour them as often as possible. Requiescat in aeternum pace Evan. They Never Die Who Live in the Hearts They Leave Behind.
Glasgow’s still Green & White.
