We normally look on the football season starting around July/August, and finishing after the Scottish Cup Final, usually in May, and with the League Trophy safely in the Celtic Boardroom, accompanied by the Scottish Cup or League Cup, and a lot of the times by both. But in reality the season goes on all year round, so we are in the “Business” part of the season, that’s when new players arrive, and some players head out in the other direction, and this season we have the added situation of having to appoint a new Manager.
I genuinely believe if Martin wants to remain in the job for at least another year, then he should be given that opportunity, the decision should be his to make. I also realise that Managing a professional football team is normally a job for an ex-player still fit enough to join in at the practice games in training, it also needs to be someone with the ability and confidence to manage a club of the standing and size of Glasgow Celtic, and it’s a different job now with everything it entails, like dealing with the media, and running a backroom staff that is similar in size to our playing squad. But probably the most import thing, is having a good relationship with the people who manage the club in the offices, they are the people who need to give you the support you need to bring in the players that will make us successful, so the manager need to manage the club up the way, as well as down the way.
The whole club has a massive job on its hands right now, of course the most important job is appointing our new manager, but there is a lot of player trading to be done, and that isn’t helped with so many of the players we would like to attract away at the World Cup. Ideally we have already identified the players we would like to get, and contact has already been made with their club and agent. I know Shaun has been handling that part of the job, and hopefully it is Martin who remains as Manager, then we don’t need to wait on a new manager to decide who we should sign.
We will find out pretty soon what we are facing, the players who are not away at the World Cup will be away on a well-earned holiday, and Luke Mc Cowan will be away on Honeymoon with his new bride Erin, congratulations to them both. It is good to get a wee break away from the football, but being a Celtic Supporter, it never leaves you, there is no close season, just a football season and the business season.
Glasgow is still Green & White.
