Double Standards the Irish Times and An Phoblacht

Postby Joe O'Rourke » Tue Dec 09, 2008 6:06 pm

Celtic have recently came under fire from two unusual areas,we have come to expect it from the Scottish media, but the two papers concerned were the Irish Times and An Phoblacht(i used to sell it in the Gorbals many years ago),both accuse Celtic of double standards regarding the Poppy Scotland appeal,in that,we celebrate our Irish heritage and culture, but on the other hand we take part in a propoganda exercise by wearing poppies on our strips to commerate those who have fallen in conflicts serving in the British Armed Forces. It is my humble opinion, that this was driven by David Murray and his cronies as a direct result of the bad publicity they received for their fans singing the poisonous and offensive Famine Song, most Celtic Supporters have no problem with remembering those who fell in the Somme,Flanders or on the beaches of Normandy, but what about those members of the British Army, who were murdering their way through Ireland at the same time, many Celtic fans lost family to those butchers, and would not be paying homage to them. But no matter what your opinion is on the matter, everyone has the right to peaceful protest, and the people who walked out caused no harm by doing so,if there were problems after that, then thats another argument, but i would defend the right of any Celtic fan to voice their opinion,i also believe that contrary to what the media said, there would have been no disruption of a minutes silence,if one had taken place.
We must learn the lessons from this episode,we must not be used as a political pawn in the future,or as a target for Murray to deflect pressure from himself,we must sit down with the fans organisations and decide what is best for the Celtic supporters,in particular our fans in Ireland must have a say,but we have a year to do it in,lets get it right this time,we must not be bullied into making on the spot decisions, which may have the effect of dividing our own support,we have a long and proud history, one of being all inclusive, that is why there are differences of opinion, and there is nothing wrong with that, the people who oppose us,are single minded sectarian racists,we would not want to be like them.
The thing that makes us a great club is,that we respect other peoples opinions,we welcome people of all faiths and of none, and we defend the right of people to form their own opinion,as long as it doesn't offend someone else.
Lets put all this behind us now,and work together to secure 4 in a row.
