Don`t look back in anger

Postby jimbob » Sun Nov 30, 2008 1:56 pm

Well after Tuesday nights result, and all the bad press we have had to put up with, especially from ex-Celtic players it was back to SPL action. We woke up this morning 4 points clear, but we all felt down in the dumps. Inverness Cally Thistle. This was not exactly the game to get us rushing to Parkhead with excitement.[/SIZE:fb775820]

[/SIZE:fb775820] But then we all felt Hearty! Life was not so bad after all, as the Huns did not let us down! Their away form was typically poor; 3 points dropped as Hearts ran out easy winners. All we had to do was beat ICT, and we would be 7 points clear.[/SIZE:fb775820]

[/SIZE:fb775820] Hartley and Maloney were back in after being on the bench against Aalborg. Mark Wilson was left out and Barry Robson moved to left back, not his best position. Celtic park was sparse as the game kicked off, but the fans were a bit more Bhoyant than they were earlier in the day. Any defeat for Rangers gets us like that![/SIZE:fb775820]

[/SIZE:fb775820] Curiously, stats were on our side. According to the razor-sharp son of a CQN poster, the last two times Rangers and Hearts have contested a game on the same day as Celtic and Inverness, with Rangers having the early kick-off, Celtic have won and Rangers have lost! The question before the game was whether this pattern would be repeated ... and on the Rangers-Hearts side, at least, it was.[/SIZE:fb775820]

[/SIZE:fb775820] That left us with our own job to do!

[/SIZE:fb775820]
[/SIZE:fb775820] There was little action of note in the opening stages of the game, as we shivered in the stands. Celtic played some nice football without being threatening. In the odd occasion we had to do some defending Stephen McManus produced a superb tackle to deny Garry Wood, while Gary Caldwell had to look lively to crowd out Imrie as he tried to race through on goal.[/SIZE:fb775820]

[/SIZE:fb775820] The game was getting bogged down and Celtic needed a moment of magic from someone to unlock their defence. And, as usual, it was Nakamura who provided it. Not for the first time, he drifted inside from the right and picked out Maloney’s run with an inch-perfect pass. His first touch was good and he placed his shot into the corner of the net.[/SIZE:fb775820]

[/SIZE:fb775820] At that point, with a goal and momentum, we sat back waiting for the goal rush, yet it never came. Celtic worked hard but lacked inspiration and, as the second half progressed, the crucial second goal did not appear and the fans grew restless. The Celtic player’s seemed to sense this and their nerves jangled as the game moved into the closing stages with only one goal separating the sides.[/SIZE:fb775820]

[/SIZE:fb775820] The final whistle sounded after four added minutes, and although the general thought was “Where did that come from?” it ended a game easily forgotten, all except for the seven-point gap Celtic had opened up on the Huns. This was enough to appease the fans, who have had a tough week.[/SIZE:fb775820]

[/SIZE:fb775820] A lot of Celtic fans were angry after the Aalborg game and, perhaps, were looking for scapegoats, but the result at Tynecastle gave us the lift we needed and now everyone is moving forward. Hopefully the board will see the need to strengthen and freshen up the team in the transfer window. [/SIZE:fb775820]

[/SIZE:fb775820] If they do, and we get in a couple of quality players, it is easy to see us leaving Rangers trailing. As the man says to the Bar-Steward “Make Mine a Treble!”[/SIZE:fb775820]
