Great weekend for the Celtic Support. Bad weekend for Police Scotland.

Postby Joe O'Rourke » Mon May 29, 2023 1:10 pm

Well that was a brilliant weekend for us Celtic Supporters, we clinch our second title in a row, and eleventh title in twelve years, then yesterday the Celtic Ladies Team retained the Scottish Cup, beating Sevco Ladies Team 2-0 in the Final, it was a brilliant display by the Celtic ladies, they should have won by a bigger margin. One positive for those playing out of Ibrox, think of the money they saved on not having to fork out for Champagne, which might let them buy a player.

Saturday afternoon saw us return to playing the type of football that leaves us on the brink of winning a “Historic World Record Eighth Treble” it was a fitting display on our final match of this season at Celtic Park, and big congratulations to the Green Brigade for their “Tifo Display” it was an absolute belter, and just reward for the hard work put into getting it ready for the match.

It was great on Saturday to see Reo Hatate back to his brilliant self, and to see Kyogo score another couple of great goals, let’s hope he is fit to start the Cup Final on Saturday Night, aye Saturday Night to accommodate BBC, then BBC decide they won’t be showing the match on BBC, just on BBC Scotland, so if you have council television outside of Scotland, you won’t get to see the match. It begs the question, just exactly what does Ian Maxwell bring to his role of Chief Executive of the SFA? He made the decision to move the kick off to the later time to avoid a clash with the English Cup Final, without consulting the CEO’s of the two teams taking part in the Final, it’s time to have a root & branch overhaul of Scottish Football.

Another stupid situation is the “Guard of Honour” for the Champions, it’s a total nonsense, Aberdeen were the only team to do it, even though we played four games as “Champions”. It was no surprise when St Mirren declined the opportunity, and when Aberdeen did it, two of their players (McCrorie and Shinnie) refused to applaud, two players who played for a team called Rangers, who ceased to exist eleven years ago. So if it isn’t going to get total respect, don’t have it, it makes absolutely no difference to Celtic Football Club and our Supporters.

Supporters celebrate in many different ways after winning a trophy. I had a few drinks with two great mates, Big Joe McGeachy, who was over from the US, and former Celt and “10 Men won the League” Legend Mike Conroy, after living in Cork City for many years Mike had developed a love of the Guinness. A lot of Celtic Supporters decided to head into town to the Merchant City/Glasgow X area to celebrate. Apparently, according to reports, Superintendent Gerry Corrigan said “Thousands of Celtic Supporters gathered in the area of Glasgow Cross for several hours to celebrate their team’s achievement. Throughout the day there was an unacceptable level of anti-social behaviour and incidents of disorder. Police officers took swift and robust action to prevent these escalating. “There were 10 arrests for a number of other offences, including assault, acts of public disorder, and police assault” No police officers were injured.

Now while I don’t encourage or condone bad behaviour, I think when you have large crowds mixing closely together, and add alcohol to the equation, it would naturally have some disorder, and let’s consider that a fair number of those celebrating would not have been at Celtic Park earlier to watch the Champions in action, but would have been in the pubs all afternoon. But I suppose the positives are, Police Scotland have learned to respond a lot quicker than they did two years ago at George Square, but then again, two years ago at George Square a few of Police Scotland’s officers were part of the disorder. I think we all know, that being a Police officer in Scotland is not the chosen career path of the vast majority of Celtic Supporters.

Onto next week. Glasgow’s Green & White … We Never Stop ….

This highlights a few things:

* The way that Scottish football as a whole is regarded by down South
* The perception that Scottish teams aren't that good - seen in how well, or not, the clubs do in Europe, and then how well, or not, the national side does.

And now we have talk of Big Ange heading south!
