It might not be the Champions League, but the kids love the John Thomson Tournament.

I had the honour and pleasure of attending the John Thomson Memorial Football Tournament in Cardenden Fife yesterday; it was even more special this year as it was the 30[SIZE=2:7339ba73]th[/SIZE:7339ba73] Anniversary of the resumption of the tournament.

Great credit must go to the John Thomson Committee; and in particular their Chairman Alex Burns who works tirelessly throughout the year to make the tournament a success. The committee also receives great support from the local Celtic Supporters Clubs in Cardenden, Ballingry, Lochgelly, and Kirkcaldy, The Celtic Supporters Association is one of the main sponsors every year; and we are proud to be associated with the tournament.

The main reason for the tournament is two-fold, first of all it is to continue to remember and celebrate the short but remarkable life of John Thomson, and secondly to continue to promote football amongst all the kids in the local community, Alex and his committee have succeeded in achieving both objectives.

The committee also looks after the grave throughout the year, making sure it is kept clean and tidy; and that there are always fresh flowers in place, it is a labour of love; and is carried out with the greatest respect.

Celtic Football Club also continue to play a big part in the hosting of the tournament, each year they send along a player to present the prizes after the tournament, this year appropriately it was goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska, the big man spent plenty of time signing autographs and posing for pictures with the kids, that is when the adults were finished.

This year we also visited and laid wreaths at the memorial to miners who were killed in a tragic accident shortly after John was killed, it was at the same mine that john had worked in before signing for Celtic.

There is a display about John at the Bowhill Centre in Cardenden; with a mixture of both old and new memorabilia on display. I would encourage any Celtic supporter who finds themselves in the area to pay the Grave and the Display a visit; you will be made most welcome
